A beginner’s guide to lifting weights

If you are the type of person that doesn’t complete an entirely cardio-driven workout, the chances are that weightlifting will make up a fair part of your workout and it will go a long way to ensuring that you are able to put weight on or really tone up in the way that you want to.

When you first approach weightlifting it’s really important that you have the skills and knowledge behind you to do this effectively, and if you aren’t armed with this information then you can easily injure yourself, or further problems can occur down the line. So before you pick up your first weights, here are some tips to take into consideration:

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

If you do head down to your local gym to lift some weights then chances are that there will be experts on hand who are able to help you throughout the process and they will probably have the knowledge and experience to make sure that you are doing it correctly.

Personal trainers aren’t just at the gym to look good, they are there to offer you some professional advice and ensure that you are doing the right thing, so if you are heading to the gym for the first time it might be worth looking at the help and assistance that they can offer you

Learn the theory and not just the practice

There is so much theory behind weightlifting that it’s important to know what you are trying to do before you do it – and in turn this will probably allow you to do it a lot more effectively. Learn about your muscles and how to target them effectively and safely, in turn this will ensure that you are able to lift the right amount of weight for your needs.

Be prepared to start gradually

I know that I’m the type of person who always wants to get stuck into something straight away – and unfortunately this is not always the best way to go. Building muscles takes time and commitment, it’s not something that can just happen straight away, so if you do find yourself in a position where you are picking up weights, make sure that you start off with just 2 or 3 times a week and that you give your muscles ample time to heal in between.

Know exactly what you are doing

None of us are experts in the weightlifting field. Unless you have been specifically trained the chances are that you definitely are not an expert. Take the time to learn about what you are doing before you do it, and as a result you may find that you are able to do it in a far safer, and more effective way.
