So what’s the best ab workout for men you ask?

To be 100% honest, there isn’t one. Losing your flabby abdomen happens in the kitchen not in your health club. That being said, we’ll talk about a good daily ab diet in another article.

This article is going to assume you are eating right and getting proper vitamins, minerals and trace nutrients as well as staying away from bad fats (hydrogenated oils, fried foods and rancid oils that rob you of energy and slow your metabolism) and processed carbohydrates like candy, sugar, pasta, wheat, bread and other unhealthy foods.

Don’t spend time in the gym as a way of trying to offset not having the discipline to eat healthy foods. This is like a dog chasing its tail. You’ll never be able to overcome the deficits and destruction caused by bad eating, by using exercise.

Diet and nutrition are king, exercise is queen. Exercise is diet’s supplement, always remember that.

Your stomach or (trunk) muscles are the part of the body in between your chest, otherwise known as the thorax and the pelvis which are protected by your rib cage and consist of

  • External abdominal obliques
  • Internal abdominal obliques
  • Pectoralis major (lower chest technically)
  • Rectus abdominus
  • Transverse abdominus
  • Tendinous inscriptions
  • Serratus anterior
  • Lilac crest
  • Inguinal ligament and Inguinal canal

As a guy we’re always looking to get that shredded core. You want that flatter cut look right? You know what I’m talking about. It’s that midsection that makes women really take notice. I mean who doesn’t want a ripped and chiseled six-pack that girls swoon after? But you’re probably sitting there right now just wishing that you were that guy right? Are you feeling bloated and embarrassed to tuck in your shirt because your gut and fat rolls hang over your belt? Have you tried all kinds of products and programs that promise results but didn’t deliver? I’ve tried resistance training, taking mad supplements, circuit training, personal trainers and followed expert guides etc. I’ve tried it all.

I just didn’t have that determination and tenacity that was needed to get six pack abs. Or did I? Was I going about it all wrong, like you probably are?

As men get older they tend to get a bit of flab around their waistlines. It’s commonly called the beer belly, love handles or a spare tire. It’s basically excess fat that starts to grow in the areas of your body that are the least likely to harm you. Can you imagine if you had all that extra fat near your heart or lungs. You’d die from a heart attack or a collapsed lung pretty quick. In its infinite wisdom your body will store the fat in areas of the body that won’t compromise its ability to survive. That’s why women store fat on their thighs and men in the stomachs.

Benefits of having a sculpted and defined six pack

Before we get into what is the best ab workout for men, just take a minute and imagine yourself with a firm, lean and muscular set of six pack abs.

You’d no longer feel ashamed to go shirtless at the beach or your pool party. Girls would start to notice you more. You’d be able to have a pick of the hottest ladies instead of settling for whoever would have you. Increased confidence in other areas of your life.

In order to get a tight physique around your waist, do you need to do hours and hours of spot reduction or isolation exercises? Do you have to eat very little calories and buy everything low fat? Do you need to hire a professional trainer and workout for 2 hours a day at the gym? Do you need to perform endless hours of cardio on the treadmill or elliptical machines? The answer to all this is no.

In order to get six back abs you just have to follow a few simple health practices each day that will start to get you results. You don’t have to overhaul your entire diet or nutritional profile.

Spot Reduction Doesn’t Work

Many guys think that in order to get six pack abs they need to focus on core exercises that train the torso, oblique’s, upper, middle and lower abdominals. Although isolation exercises work to build muscle, they don’t work to lose fat. In order to get a flat midsection, you obviously need to have muscles there but training those muscles isn’t what is going to get those chiseled and defined muscles in your core. That all comes with eating the right diet. For guys who are really concerned with impressing the ladies with strong stomach muscles, I’ve been recommending to focus 70% on your diet and 30% on your exercise and workout routines.

Full body compound workouts that use your stomach as stabilizing muscles are going to be the most ideal for you. As far as the fitness and training routine, I tell guys to focus 70% of their abdominal training regimen on compound exercises and 30% on isolation exercises.

Compound exercises include

  1. Bench press
  2. Squats
  3. Deadlifts
  4. Inverted Barbell rows
  5. Barbell lunges

To find the best ab workout for men, you’re probably more interested in isometric and isolation exercises that focus on core strength and tightening up the abdominal muscles.

Here are my 5 best ab workouts for men

Cardiovascular exercises include running, biking, walking, cross training, dancing, surfing etc. Basically you need these types of exercises to burn fat and calories. The elliptical machine and stair stepper machines are great along with treadmills. I suggest going outside for a bike ride or hiking in the local mountains.

Doing elongation exercises of your core trunk muscles will help stretch out your core allowing for greater flexibility along with more muscle fibers that are exposed to intense training when you do isolation exercises in the gym. Yoga helps everything else you do, but nothing else can help yoga. Yoga should be the core of your entire workout program. It helps with breathing, flexibility, balance and injury prevention.

You can perform crunches by lying on the ground on your back, preferably on a workout mat. Place your hands behind your head, while keeping your feet flat on the ground with your knees bent. Lift your head, chest, shoulders and trunk up about 6 inches off the ground. This will help put stress on your core stomach muscles. Do as many as you can for 1 minute, then rest for 30 seconds while doing 3 sets.

Planks are one of the best core strength exercises you can do. It’s one of the best ab workouts for men because of the greater trunk and core strength guys have in order to perform and get results from this amazing exercise. Many women have trouble with this one because it requires lower and upper back strength along with shoulder and arm strength. I recommend 5 sets for 1 minute each with rests of 45 seconds in between each set.

Bar Twists

The side to side motion of bar twists make this one of the best ab workouts for men because it helps create definition and that washboard look many guys crave. Instead of concentrating on just your ab muscles it helps to elongate and stretch the entire trunk muscle set. I like to tell guys to do 5 sets of 15 reps with a weighted bar rather than a light stick. This will help to further your range of motion along with creating a pulling and stretching effect on your stomach muscles.

Again the best ab workouts for men are really these 3 core ideas:

  • Eat a proper diet Cardio and Yoga
  • Full body compound workouts
  • isolation exercises

If you follow these 3 principles for 21 days straight you will not only lose pounds and inches off your waistline, you’ll start to see those rippling muscles hidden under all that fat. Your six pack ab quest will be complete.
