If you’re in the market for a lower priced treadmill but don’t want to give up some of the features and benefits that the more pricey varieties offer, one treadmill that you may want to give some consideration to is the Horizon T101 model. This model has been designed for the budget-conscious consumer in mind, but yet doesn’t sell itself short as far as what it has to offer goes.
When I first heard about this treadmill, I was a bit skeptical about how well-made it would be given its price point. I have used lower priced treadmills before and to say I was disappointed would be putting it mildly. In many cases, as far as treadmill buying goes, you get what you pay for. I was pleasantly surprised with the Horizon T101 treadmill. It comes loaded with features – some that I know top line models don’t even provide, and while it’s definitely not perfect, it’s a great option for most exercisers. This treadmill comes with a total of 9 programming options, which I really love since then you can select your program and forget about it. If you enjoy variety with your workouts, you will love having these at your fingertips. For those of you who prefer to custom-create your own workout, that’s not a problem at all either as there is the manual program feature.
Another nice thing I liked about the Horizon T101 model is the fact that it offers a lift system for fold up storage. Please bare in mind, that it doesn’t go completely vertical. For space saving though, this feature is excellent. Additionally, it also offers a fantastic cushioning system over most lower cost models, which will help ensure that you don’t end up suffering from knee, ankle, or hip pain as you go about your runs. So many people completely overlook how important it is to get a solid cushioning support system, and when I hoped on this treadmill to give it a test run, I could instantly notice the difference from other models.
I also really liked that it has the ability to go up to a 10% incline. On days when I don’t want to run, I like to be able to add more challenge to my workout in other ways and the incline makes it easy. It moves fluidly and quickly up on the incline, so there is no jerkiness like you might experience with other models. As I took a look at the speed increases of the treadmill, I did notice that it does shake slightly more when going beyond about 5 mph, so for those folks who are into lots of fast paced training may want to take note of this. I could still use the treadmill despite this mild shaking, but it did make it feel slightly less sturdy. It is, however, a very quiet machine, so you’ll have no problem using this while others are at home, watching your tv, or listening to music as you workout.
Finally, the Horizon T101 model also comes with speakers and a fan, which are two good features that set it apart. The cooling fan has three settings you can choose from. The speakers deliver a pretty decent output too, but for me, I normally just use my ipod with ear pieces as I train. These two particular features make a huge difference in how much I enjoy my workouts and there are others that would agree on that too.
One thing I liked about the Horizon T101 model was how well it does cater to a variety of fitness levels. Because you get a good pace range with the machine and can also utilize the incline it comes with very easily, this makes it ideal for a beginner or someone who is more advanced looking to go about their workout sessions. With the different programming options as well, that also lends well to users of various fitness levels. This machine is a good entry level treadmill for those interested in walking or light running, but for people who take their training a lot more seriously, this machine would not suit as I can’t see it being able to hack the demands of a more active athlete.
The only potentially negative thing I found with this treadmill is the fact that it does only go up to 10mph. Some runners who are more experienced and who do like to do interval training at a much more intense speed may struggle to stay challenged at the 10mph mark. Fortunately though, this can be overcome by using the treadmill on an incline, so all in all this negative doesn’t have to be a deal-breaker for purchasing the treadmill.
All in all, if you’re on a budget but still want to be sure that you get active in your running workouts, the Horizon T101 treadmill might be a good call. For a cost effective option, it really can’t be beat and comes with many of the same features that you would get from the higher priced models out there. Horizon Fitness are a reputable brand and this particular model is particularly popular with many entry level trainers. It offers good value for its asking price. Its fairly simple to assemble and the wide treadbelt gave me a comfortable training experience.
